Autumn Gardening Tips

IMG_0365

Autumn can still produce some beautiful blooms. Pansies thrive in the fall and can last up to two seasons with proper care. Mums come in various colors and go well with fall colors. Autumn is the best time to plant spring bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, because they need a dormant, cold period before they bloom. Dig a hole and pour in a little bone meal before sitting the bulbs inside. Cover with dirt and you should have beautiful blooms in the spring. Did you know that tulips were more valuable than gold in the 17th century?

Some vegetables can also be planted in the fall. Lettuce, kale, and spinach are a few hardy species. My carrots usually last through the early part of winter also.

So bundle up and get outside.
