I visited Virginia as the last of my tour of the East coast and had to see Mt. Vernon, the plantation of George Washington. They were remodeling the main house, but I was able to get a picture of it. Did you know George Washington was the first to try making fertilizer? He made a rectangular space for it and added compost scraps. He owned horses, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the dung was added to it.
The plantation is huge, but for people that have a hard time walking, there are benches to sit along the way. George had many different gardens, one for flowers, one for vegetables, and the other was fruit trees. He also owned slaves. They had their own quarters on the plantation. The women and men were separated and the slaves slept in bunk beds. Even though George owned slaves, he treated them decent and he made an area special for them when they died.
There is a good restaurant on site. The food was delicious. I had the turkey pot pie. It was huge and filling. I highly recommend visiting the area, especially if you like history. There are several museum pieces on the property. I have a few photographs, even though I took several, my memory stick from my camera wouldn’t work, but here are a couple from my phone.
