Excess salt and artificial sweeteners can contribute to eye puffiness. Seasonal allergies trigger the release of histamines in the body, inflame the blood vessels, and cause swelling. Over the counter Benadryl or other antihistamines can be helpful, but here are a few tips without medications:
- elevate head with two pillows at bedtime
- ice packs over the eyes for fifteen minutes
- cotton balls soaked in warm water and salt and placed on the eyes for a few minutes
- damp caffeinated tea bags over the eyes
Elevating your head at night, prevents the body fluids from pooling under the eyes, while sleeping. Caffeine works by constricting the blood vessels under the eyes which relives the puffiness. The ice and cotton ball trick feels good and relives the pressure from the swelling.
