Here is another legend I came across that sounded interesting. For those of you that like mythology will find it interesting. It is said when Hercules returned from the land of the dead, he wore a wreath of silver-leafed poplar. The inner side of the leaves turned white as they pressed against Hercules’ sweaty brow. The outer side of the leaves were exposed to the heat and smoke of the underworld, causing them to blacken.
