Don’t you hate that burning feeling and that yucky taste in the back of your throat? It’s called Acid Reflux or GERD, but it’s known as heartburn. Most people will grab an antacid medication off the shelf of the local drug store, without researching the product, to get a quick relief. But did you know that the calcium-carbonate antacids can actually trigger more acid production in some people? And some antacid products can cause bone loss over the years as well as a low Vitamin B level. In the long run this can lead to osteoporosis. Your body needs the acid to break up food. Many years of antacid usage can prevent the body from breaking down the natural food process. So what is a person to do?
Some people naturally have more hydrochloric acid than others. Try to avoid the foods and drinks that are the major cause of the heartburn. Fried and fatty foods also slow digestion, besides the extra acid production. Avoid spicy foods and foods high in acid such as tomato products. Drink plenty of water with rich meals which will dilute the acid and keep the food moving throughout the digestion tract. If you experience heartburn at night, try elevating your head and upper back with pillows. Wait a few hours after eating before going to bed.
